Story pitch

My short story is an urban fantasy called Valley, about a stubborn shop owner who wants to be left alone, despite that when his friends wife goes missing its up to him to get out of his comfort zone and try to help out and find her before its too late.

It takes place in a world similar to our own but with a key difference, instead of science being the main focus of modern society, instead things are made and powered using magic.

Akil however doesn't agree with this idea, thinking that people have gotten too soft and complacent with the use of all these new gadgets and spells. He prefers to grow his own plants and use magic is more traditional sense, not for things like flying or making his breakfast.

And so a majority of the story takes place within his shop that sells plants and herbal remedies. Unfortunately one of his regulars, a man with a large hat enters the shop asking to pick up his wife's order. She was about to go on an expedition into a tunnel and had a preference for Akil, the shop owners remedies. A few weeks later the regular returns in a flurry of tears, his wife had gone missing and he was fearful for her, as she'd never taken this long before.

Akil eventually agrees to help out and so together they travel into the tunnels and quickly get separated. He finds a cavern with a strange, unmoving body of water that turns out to be a large slime monster that had taken residence in the pond. Its up to Akil to try and save not only the hat man, but his wife as well if she was even still alive.

The main theme of this short story is New vs Traditional, two different takes on how to live your life. Many people would agree with the idea of accepting the new and forgetting the old, but relying on fancy technology and never doing things for yourself comes at a risk of its own. Just like how traditional methods might not be as fast and efficient, new ones can leave you missing the pleasure of making something yourself and skipping out on a lot in life.

The goal is to show that moderation and compromise is key, you can have new with old. Think of Harry Potter, you have the muggles and the Wizards, and in the end its someone from both worlds that saves the day.
